Gameplay in Torg Eternity (hereafter referred to simply as Torg) is cinematic in nature, with the game's adventures divided up into Acts and Scenes. Each Act can be comprised of multiple Scenes, with less of a focus on the mundane day to day events. These adventures are the dramatic struggles of fighting off the invaders and inspiring the inhabitants of this world.
Heroes in Torg can be from any of the realms, either as someone who arrived with the invaders but now fights to defend Core Earth, or people from our world who were converted to the new reality which invaded their area of Earth. Mages from Aysle will partner with Victorian era occultists to tackle techno-samurai and primitive lizard men.
Torg is a tabletop roleplaying in which you play a hero defending Core Earth from the Reality Raiders, who seek to plunder this world of it's mysterious Possibility Energy. Gameplay involves 2 dice and different decks of cards. Your primary die is 20 sided (d20), and a 6 sided die (d6) is used in certain results. Card are used to determine initiative (whether the heroes or the villains go first) as well as to impact the results of your actions.
Torg at it's most basic involves rolling a d20 to generate a bonus number. That bonus number is added to your skill, and then compared to a difficulty number. If you tie or exceed that difficulty, you are successful. If you exceed that difficulty by 5, then you achieve a Good Success. If you exceed it by 10 or more you achieve an Outstanding success.
Where Torg really shines though it in the fact that your d20 roll can be increased in multiple ways. If you roll a 10 or 20, you roll the d20 again, and add that to the first roll, and generate an even higher bonus. Roll a 10 or 20 AGAIN and you again get to add that to the previous totals. If you are not lucky enough to roll a 10 or 20 naturally, you can spend a Possibility point to roll again and add that value to your original roll. You may also have a card that can be played to increase your bonus value, or even roll an addition d20, to further increase the bonus.
There are 3 types of cards that are used in Torg:
The Drama Deck is used to determine whether you or the villains go first in combat. It will also potentially apply effects on combat, benefitting you or your opponents. Combat can be standard which favours the heroes, or dramatic which favours the villains. Drama cards will also indicate which actions are approved, which when done successfully allow you to draw a Destiny card.
Destiny cards are drawn by the players and can be played to improve skill attempts, gain additional roles, or to modify the storyline.
Cosm cards modify your gameplay to match the theme of the realm in which you are adventuring. Some of these can be purely beneficial, or have benefit at a cost.
